Reasons For Demolishing A Building

By Timothy Sanderson

Demolition signifies processes used to tear down or destroy buildings and other structures. Unlike deconstruction, which involves the careful taking down of the building to allow for some elements to be re-used or preserved, controlled demolition specialises in bringing the structure down quickly and safely. So what are the principal reasons why buildings might be demolished?

Firstly if a building has been uninhabited for quite a while and is not owned by anyone or in a position to be sold, then it often is practical for them to be demolished so as to make way for the construction of new buildings. This will be particularly relevant when the buildings have been left for quite a while or are taking up lots of land in a prime spot as it will be better all-around if the land can be put to better use through the introduction of new domestic or commercial properties.

Another principal reason why buildings could be scheduled for demolition is that they are old and in a state of disrepair. It can be quite costly to refurbish buildings which are not in a good condition and for that reason in these circumstances tearing the building down is often the best way to not only keep the area safe but perhaps to regenerate and build afresh after the old building has been removed. If the expense of repairing the building is significantly more than the building is worth then controlled demolition is certainly going to be a very viable option.

If a building contains hazardous materials, toxins or waste that can't be removed sufficiently to allow for inhabitation then again demolition could be the answer. Of course any harmful substances would need to be removed first but it won't matter how invasive these techniques were if the final outcome was sure to be the demolition of the building.

When considering building demolition it is essential that only properly qualified demolition contractors are considered for the job. This is because it's a prime concern to guarantee the safety of any people or other buildings near to the one considered for demolition. An initial assessment will be completed by the demolition company to ensure the structure is viable for the procedure before demolition works can happen.
