One of the craziest things I keep seeing is bloggers who spend a lot of time and effort in an attempt to attract new visitors but then give them no reason to stay or come back once they arrive. To me it's the same no matter what market you're in, if you want to create a successful site then you need to invest in your content and design, there's no way around it.
There's nothing worse than when you go to a blog and the latest post on the homepage is from a year ago. To me it pretty much invalidates everything this blogger has to say, just because they clearly don't care about the blog anymore. You really need to have a new post at least once a week.
If you want people to come back to your blog then they need to have something to come back for. There's new and exciting things happening in every industry and you readers will expect you to be talking about it. Everybody wants to be the first to know and if you're seen as the go to blog for what's new success can't be far away.
One mistake I see time and again is bloggers overloading their visitors with too much content. Lots of content isn't necessarily bad but it is when it has no structure. There's nothing worse than landing on a blog with 40 posts on the homepage, show 5 at most on the index with a most popular posts section at the side to help people find your best work.
Blogging is all about interaction, it's the only way people can feel they have a real connection with the guy writing the posts. So answer any questions people have in the comments fast, also you can bet if one person has asked the question then there are a hundred more who are thinking it.
So those are my best ideas for creating a blog that really works (and hopefully makes money). Let me know if they worked for you.
